I choose to take pictures of a porcelain doll. For the first one the flash was not on and it appeared to be dark and you can see shadows on the face as I wonder why because there is no flash. The second one I decided to post, I used my flash and you can see I was to close because of the white out and the glare. They were both taken in the same spot, as with the first photo you can see the wall and the strings in which the clown is hanging from the second looks as though there is no background.

I have to say Tracy, clowns scare the crap out of me, but I do really like these pictures, and it's really interesting how they came out so differently!
It's funny that Mallory was scared because, although I'm fine with clowns, I still view the idea of a porcelain clown as something freaky. Each appear slightly out of focus; the first likely due to the lack of light or imbalance between aperture and shutter, the second due to the closeness of the flash to the object, thereby bouncing right back to the camera. The second effect is pretty cool; the dolls make-up forms rings of color.
Good compare and contrast with flash versus no flash. Funny how our eyes and brain compensate, if we were in the room where the first shot was taken we wouldn't say "gee the light is bad and that doll looks yellow"! It would look normal. There are shadows because there is a light source someplace. Even ambient light from the sun or a light in another room would have an effect.
